Sex and Zen: Extreme Ecstasy is a Chinese 3D porn film that has been declared the world's first movie of its kind. Purportedly too obscene to be seen in its full version in its homeland, Sex and Zen has drawn assemblies of Chinese audiences to Hong Kong, where the film is being shown in an uncut version.
Made partly as an attempt to revitalize a weakening industry (you've been a bad boy, internet), Sex and Zen is by no means a low budget throwaway porn film. Coming in at a total budget cost of £2m, this Cantonese language fantasy film of lofty production values is set during the times of ancient China, at the bawdy, sexy-party court of the Ming dynasty. The film's "story" is about a young man who befriends a duke and joins the grandiose world of royal orgies and other various sexual faux pas. Apparently, it is also a revamped version of a 1991 Chinese film, also entitled Sex and Zen.
While I myself won't delve into any explicit reasons for why I would never want to watch a porn movie in 3D, I'll instead allow Sex and Zen's writer and producer Stephen Shiu to do the honours: "It will leave audiences feeling like they are sitting right there at the edge of the bed." Oh, how right you are, Stephen! I couldn't have put it any better if I tried.
